(i) LAN stands for Local Area Network.

(i) WAN stands for Wide Area Network.

(ii) LAN is a computer network covering a
small geographic area, link a home, office, schools, or group of buildings.

(ii) WAN is a computer network that covers
a broad area.

(iii) LAN has high speed (up to 1000 mbps).
|
(iii) WAN has less speed (up to 150 mbps).
|
(iv) The LAN is build using the layer 2
devices like switches, bridges and layer 1 devices like hubs.

(iv) The WAN is build using the layers 3
devices Router and Multi layer switches.

(v) LAN is owned, controlled and managed
by a single person or organization.

(v) WAN’s are not owned by any one
organization but rather exist under distributed ownership.

(vi) LAN is easier to maintain at
relatively low costs.
|
(vi) Maintaining WAN is difficult because
of its wider geographical coverage and higher maintenance costs.
|
(vii) LAN experiences fewer data
transmission errors.

(vii) WAN experiences more data
transmission errors.
|
(viii) LANs have a high data transfer rate.
|
(viii) WANs have a lower data transfer rate
compared to LANs.

(ix) High bandwidth is available for
transmission.

(ix) Low bandwidth is available for
transmission.

(x) The network is spread to a very small
location.

(x) The network can be spread world wide.
|
(xi) The best example for a LAN is the
network in an organization.

(xi) The best example for a WAN is the
Internet.
